Help children in Uganda experience hope

“Five years from now, the quality of education at Bbaale Ggunda Primary will equal the quality of schools in Canada.” These inspiring words, shared recently by a parent leader at Bbaale Ggunda Primary, reflect a hope and vision for the future that is taking root across Uganda’s Rakai district. It’s a vision to see every child receive a quality education, regardless of their location or circumstances, and it’s a vision that is made possible through the generous support of donors like you!

In March 2022, Wellspring launched our Rakai School Development Program in partnership with Kuwasha—a contextualized program designed to address the unique challenges faced by schools and communities in that region. When our trainers first arrived in Rakai, they discovered classrooms with very few students, absent teachers, and a tangible sense of hopelessness. However, in the months since, a tangible sense of hope and anticipation has been growing. At Bbaale Ggunda Primary, we are so encouraged to see the progress being made:

• ⬆️ Student enrollment, which sat at 200 in 2022, has now risen by 50% to 300.
• 🌽  All students are provided with lunch each day, thanks to parents growing beans and corn.
• 📋 The school is now guided by a vision, mission statement, school motto, and an action plan.
• 🧱 Parents are renovating a ramshackle building to provide more classroom space.
• 🏆 All of this change is being supported by an engaged, active, and empowered head teacher.

When asked what has happened in the hearts of the teachers and parents that so much change has occurred in such a short time, this head teacher shared, “They have hope now. And thanks to the trainers who support and monitor our progress, the staff and families believe we are just at the beginning of the improvements we can make together.”
